I know it’s obvious that Rolling Stone isn’t a relevant publication anymore but what’s the point of being a culture critic if all you’re doing is pandering? It’s just so apparent that they’re only around still to keep cranking out subscriptions, I haven’t read a Rolling Stone article that was actually well written in years. Not to mention the blatant and unwelcome liberal slant, not that I even disagree with them all the time but I’m reading a goddamn music magazine, I don’t need any branding political commentary.

This issue in particular though is just the worst. Besides Metallica being on the cover, their list of acts to “Keep an eye on in 2012” includes such musical prodigies as Gotye, Grimes, fun., Cloud Nothings, Beach House, and Alabama Shakes. Let’s go one by one:

Gotye - Give me a fucking break. Name one other good song on Making Mirrors. Even “Somebody That I Used To Know” pretty much rides entirely on it’s ‘weird’ production. Gotye might be a YouTube phenomenon but I’m not holding my breath for him to actually make a good album anytime soon, everyone I talked to when that song was getting huge had this weird uncertainty about how good it actually was. I feel like everyone was just too apathetic to not let him become this huge thing.

Grimes - I actually think that hiding beneath all of the half-baked song ideas there’s potentially a good artist in Grimes, but everything about her just seems so calculated for indie success. I don’t think that new album is as good as everyone says it is but I’m hoping with another album or two she’ll actually earn her coverage.

fun. - I’d be lying if I told you I knew the name of a single fun. song. But I do know exactley what they sound like and I’m just throwing it out there that not a single person I know who’s really into music actually likes this band. Indie types, mainstream types, whatever, I don’t know who’s really listening to them. And just a side note, using weird punctuation and capitalization in your band name is tacky.

Cloud Nothings - I actually dug the grungy-Pixies-via-emo vibe they got on the first two songs from the new album, but the rest of it is pretty standard indie garage material. Again, they potentially could actually have a unique sound but they settle way too often on cut and paste songwriting.

Beach House - Honestly I thought Flying Lotus was spot on about this band. They’re not even bad but it’s just kind of a bummer when a band is content to just stay at “good background music” level and nothing else. The only part of a Beach House song that’s every grabbed my attention was the chorus of “Walk in the Park”, otherwise it’s just indie easy listening.

Alabama Shakes - Whatever. She’s got a good voice I guess. I don’t like their name though, why would you put the name of your state in your band name?? They just feel like part of the indie shuffle, I don’t know.

I don’t even hate any of these bands, but it just seems like the perfect group for Rolling Stone to pick out as ‘noteworthy’ when all that really means is ‘getting blogged about a lot lately’. There are so many other cool bands they could have put in the spotlight but as per usual modern Rolling Stone, playing it safe takes priority over actually being a legitimate music publication.

all I have to say about this is, people who don’t do their research is fucking tacky. just saying.

i cant.

You spelled ‘exactly’ wrong when insulting fun. Therefore, YOUR INSULT IS INVALID. Maybe if you would listen to one of their songs besides We Are Young, you would realise how talented they really are. Considering their entire tour sold out, I am pretty positive there are people who enjoy their music. Also, they only used “tacky” punctuation because the name had already been taken by a Swedish band.

So this pisses me off to no end. Yeah I don’t listen to most of these bands so I don’t know a lot about what their success is, but insult fun. and you’re done. Do some research on these bands before you start stating your very ignorant opinion.
fun.- First of all. Their “tacky punctuation” wasn’t their first idea of the band name. It was added afterward because issues from another band. Secondly, stop insulting bands when you only know one song that the media made popular.

* These bands are doing what they love, which is making music. and since you actually know the names of them enough to insult them they’ve obviously gotten somewhere.
* I hate when people over criticize bands, seriously, say that you don’t like them or something, but not knowing your shit and then ignorantly posting on tumblr TO PEOPLE WHO MOSTLY LISTEN TO INDIE BANDS is just your attention-whoreness problem. ( oh and tagging it under the fun. thing, are you trying to get death threats?)

Listen to the music that is your type and don’t criticize other peoples taste in music because they probably have some things to say about yours.
